SO HOW MANY FIND LOVE ON THEIR COLLEGE CAMPUS?
When I first decided to blog on my journey going back to school, many people suggested I speak on dating and relationships in college. Of course this was amusing to me because back when I was in school, dating in college was like trying to find love in the club… have your fun, but don’t take any of it seriously. College was all about hooking up, exploring your “type”, getting to know people with similar interests- and MAYBE if you both are serious you’d date for a couple of months . But nothing worth changing your Facebook status over.
Well with Valentine’s Day right around the corner I figured what better time to tackle this subject and hear from couples who have proven, you can find love on campus. So whether you’re celebrating “Bae-Day” tomorrow or simply treating it like just another day in February, check out these 5 couples below who share their love stories and advice on what makes their relationships last…
“LONG DISTANCE LOVE”
BRANDON & KETURAH
School: Deleware State University
How did you two meet?
Keturah: I was never a believer in love at first sight until I saw Brandon. It may sound cliché but it is the truth. Brandon and I met on the campus of Delaware State University, he was on the modeling team and Mister Senior of the university. For me, I knew Brandon was the one instantly. He was different. He was the first person who actually “saw” me. Beyond what meets the eye; a connection that forever kept me wanting more. I was certain when I found myself going throughout the day anxiously awaiting the small moments when our paths would cross and realized he was the first thing I thought about when I woke up and the last thing I prayed over at night.
Brandon: If you ask Keturah, she would probably say she knew it was love at first glance, but I grew more intrigued after every conversation. Every story told, every layered peeled, I grew more infatuated and left wanting more. I can honestly say love snuck up on me, when I learned more about her, and with my graduation approaching I knew I couldn’t let that die. I knew I needed her and from that moment I knew I was in love.
What are some things that made your relationship successful?
B&K: Most definitely communication. Keeping others out of your business and out of your relationship.
Before you got with your significant other, did you find dating on campus complicated?
Keturah: People use the word “dating” very loosely on college campuses and people are into things for the wrong reasons. So that can make dating difficult. Ultimately, I was looking for a relationship on campus.
Brandon: I also believe that the term dating is thrown around very loosely and some people might take a relationship they have with someone more seriously than the other. I thought having a relationship in college would be very difficult which is why I did not really pursue one. You also have people on campus that always want to know what is going on, and when people find out two people are together it becomes front page news. That can also lead to issues in a relationship.
You both went from seeing each other daily to now being in a long distance relationship, how has this impacted your relationship? What advice would you give to other couples in long distance relationships?
B&K: Always consider the other person’s feelings. As you go about your day ask yourself “if I did this, how would they feel?” Keeping that question in the back of your mind can eliminate a lot of potential issues. Always stay prayerful; constantly pray for understanding, love and harmony. Honesty is always best no matter what the circumstance and with that will come trust. Lastly, when times get hard and the distance is getting to you, make sure that you have your next visit already planned. Having something to look forward to makes the days go by quicker and make seeing each other so worth it.
